Can't get mower to start?
I have a Craftsman Riding Mower with a 23 hp Kohler Engine. It has been running fine until this week, when it refused to start. Battery has full charge. Replaced the plug and filters. - Let me say I am not very mechanically inclined - I did some Internet research and checked for spark. Doesn't appear to be any. What should I do next? When I place the battery on a starter, the flywheel turns slowly but won't turn over. I tried jumping the solenoid and that didn't work. Your input is greatly appreciated.
It's doubtfull the starter went out on you.
It's possible the battery has a problem. (maybe corroded)
1) Find a 7\16" wrench and remove the negative battery terminal and clean it, and the battery post.
2) While the negative cable is still removed, do the same with the positive terminal.
3) Reassemble. (positive first) then negative
Try the starter again.
If it still will not turn over, remove both spark plugs and try it again.
(there may be oil, or gas in the cylinder)
If it STILL won't turn over, take your battery down and have it load tested at a auto parts store or something.
If after making sure the battery is good, and there's nothing in the cylinders stopping the pistons, You may have a bad starter.
Starters cost over $180.00. That's why I wanted you to go thru this first.
With the spark plugs out, you should be able to turn the engine by hand on the flywheel fan screen.
How's the oil level?
Well, that's a good starting point.There could be a number of other possible problems, but let's get it turn over first.
