a prisoner walks along a path at a rate of 1.5 m/s. A Spot Light in on the ground 10m from the path and rotates to shine on the prisoner. at what rate is the light rotating when the man is 20m from the point on the path closest to the light and is walking away from the light?
I dont even know where to start with this problem, so an explanation would be great.
Draw a picture of the situation as viewed from above. Draw the path as, say, a horizontal line. Draw a vertical line segment from this line, representing a line from the path to the spotlight. Label it as 10 meters long. From the point where this segment touches the path, mark off some arbitrary distance and call this distance x. This is where the prisoner is at the time t. Finally, draw a line segment from the spotlight to the prisoner.
You should have a right triangle with the prisoner at one of the acute angles, and the spotlight at the other acute angle. The rate of change of this latter angle (call it θ) is the rate at which the light is rotating.
One of the legs is always 10 meters long; the other is x meters long. Find a relationship between θ and x. Then
dθ/dt = (dθ/dx)(dx/dt)
The prisoner is walking away from the light, so x is increasing with time; therefore dx/dt = +1.5 m/s (if he were walking toward the light, it would be negative). You will need to evaluate dθ/dx at x = 20 to answer this question.
