Wood Carving: How to Choose the Right Style
Wood carving is a special craft. It requires extreme patience that could flourish with a fine imagination. If you decide to become a wood carver, you'll have several styles to choose from. You could use just a piece of wood and a small knife. Or you could go so far as using power tools. So how can you know which style is best for you?
There are five main styles of woodcarving. Each style is distinctly different from the other. These styles are whittling, chip carving, relief carving, intaglio carving and carving in the round.
?Whittling. Whittling involves the removal of pare shavings or bits of wood with a cutting blade. It is the simplest form of wood carving, but not actually the art of wood carving. This is a significant distinction because whittling is, and should always be, very simple. A piece of wood and a knife are all you require. And because it is so simple, whittled objects don't have much detail, as is the case in all other styles of wood carving.
When you're holding a whittled object in your hand, you absolutely know it. Each knife stroke is clearly seen. It remains as simple as when it began centuries ago, during the time of cavemen. Isn't that amazing?
?Chip Carving. Chip carving involves the use of several knives to remove small pieces of wood (chips) from a flat wood surface. These are specially made chip knives that are used to push or pull at the wood, cutting upwards or downwards to free each chip.
Chip carving has become so popular that it is now its own art form. The main technique is to chip varying triangular shapes from the wood. This creates complex patterns that are often geometric in nature. Free form lines are regularly used to accentuate these chipped patterns. You could really let your imagination go.
?Relief Carving. In this style of wood carving, designs are cut in 3-dimensional fashion onto a flat back cut of wood. These are the wood carvings you see on walls or sitting on tables or surface tops.
There are two types of relief carving. A low relief carving is identifiable by the visual effect that is created. Without shadows to imply deep carving, the product appears very shallow and is thus considered low relief. In high relief carvings, a spectacular depth effect is created by the addition of shadows throughout. Both types result in carvings with good dimension and detail. The end product is polished to create a very smooth surface. Then it may be painted, waxed or varnished.
?Intaglio Carving. This style of wood carving is very similar to relief carving. But instead of looking as though it is above the wood surface, it looks as if it is part of the wood. The designs are below the suface because they are carved deep into the wood. Think of old wooden rolling pins. Remember the cute little pictures that were carved into it? That's intaglio carving.
Many furniture makers really like the style of intaglio carving. It has come so far as to be fitted for a blank space, carved separately and then inserted into the furniture. How about that? It can even be found in dining tables and in bedroom furniture. It's wonderful for wood paneling. You can even see it in specialty plaques, as part of an existing decorative item or as the actual surface of coffee tables and end tables.
?Carving In The Round. This is the most advanced style of wood carving. The product can be viewed from all sides with a full and easy view of all details. It is carved out of the wood and its base serves as a supporting platform or as a pedestal. The carving could be a person, an animal or a landscapenearly anything you can imagine. It could be life-sized or to scale. The sky is almost the limit with carving in the round.
This style of carving requires quite a number of tools. A variety of knives, gouges and chisels are a bare minimum. The use of power tools is not surprising and often expected. The final product then is usually quite spectacular. Oftentimes, a product of carving in the round is easily mistaken for a porcelain creation. The details are that impressive.
Wood carving has been around since the days of cavemen. With time, it has become quite an impressive art to behold. It's very relaxing, often exhilarating and extremely satisfying. If you're looking for a hobby, wood carving could be just what you're looking for.

My chainsaw keeps damaging the chainsaw blade?
My chainsaw keeps tearing up the inner teeth, that fit into the bar. Its a Homelite 16" chainsaw with S56 teeth. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the chain damage?
Oiler is working pretty well. I had just a little bit of play in the blade

Just my personal opinion, but I prefer Poulan. They manufacture a good product. Sears stands behind what they sell with a good guarantee, but they only sell their brand manufactured by a different company. For example, if you purchase a Sears Kenmore brand washing machine, you are really getting a GE brand. I don`t know who manufactures Craftsman brand trimmers, but it`s possible it could be a poulan anyway. Ask the sales rep. and he can possible tell you.

Scissors. That's right. Good old, every day, common, take 'em for granted, garden variety, scissors. But, when you stop and think about 'em, as we should when we start taking anything for granted, probably one of the best inventions ever, like, in the history of the world.
Seriously. Take a few minutes, stop runnin' around like a chicken with its head cut off like we all do, slow down, and think about some of the tools we all take for granted--especially scissors. This was brought home to me recently when I started carrying a multi-tool in my pocket (they're also small enough, and light enough to carry on a key chain) and, you guessed it, the multi-tool unfolds to a pair of scissors, voila! Now that I've got it really handy I use it every day.
Imagine: you've just been out shopping and you bought a couple pieces of clothing; you sit down on the couch to really look 'em over and you start taking off all those stickers and tags and you notice those tags with the plastic piece that's stuck through the fabric and you can only get it off with-haha, a pair of scissors. Now, I know you think I'm just tryin' to sell you something, like a brand of multi-tool. But, I'm a professional mechanic on mail-processing equipment and these pocket multi-tools really come in handy. For less than 25 bucks, I've got scissors in my pocket any time I need 'em! So, ya pop out your multi-tool, unfold it, and snip off that plastic tag; now the only problem ya have is whether you're close enough to a trash can to keep the tags from ending up down in the cushions (dibs on the loose change!).
Or, consider: how many times have you been out and about and you notice you have an Irish pennant (no offense, I'm part Irish). You know, those loose threads you're not supposed to pull on 'cause your shirt sleeve falls off when you do (just like Mom said), or the button falls off (just like Grandma said), or the seam unravels, and on and on. But, with my multi-tool in my pocket I'm not even tempted to pull that pennant. Just pop out the multi-tool, unfold it and snip away.
Which brings me to the best part of multi-tools: they fold up! That's right. No sharp-pointed anything in your pocket to stick through and then poke your leg. I mean, accidental minor surgery just ain't no fun. Ever carry a pair of scissors in your pocket like me to trim your beard/mustache? Even the safety scissors with the rounded ends aren't really meant to go in your pocket, now are they? Pocket multi-tool, baby; now that's the ticket.
The moral of the story is: don't get outa bed without your pocket multi-tool! (That's right: it's the next generation "Don't leave home without it.") Scissors, knife, screwdrivers, file, nail cleaner, tweezers, bottle opener - for under 25 bucks! -- women, men, teens, everybody needs to carry a pocket multi-tool. (Make a pretty good gift, don't ya think?)
P.S. I now carry a second pocket multi-tool with pliers so I can get a grip (which my wife says would be especially helpful in my case). Check it out online--you'll never regret owning a pocket multi-tool.

Ways That We Are Having Knife Sharpening Workshop
Knife sharpening was recognized as an important part of tool maintenance since the very first primitive tool was made. In the Colonial times, a grist mill was often the first building to be set up and running when a new settlement was being formed. That is because these pioneers recognized that without sharp tools, the rest of the building would be slowed dramatically.
Today's knife sharpening tools are based on the same basis physics as the old grist mills and whet stones, but with a whole lot more power behind them. Grinding wheels that were once powered by water wheels are now zapped with electricity to do the job in a fraction of the time.
What to Look for in a Knife Sharpener
A knife sharper that will serve you well for many years can take on several forms. The bench top grinder for example is good for sharpening gardening tools and axe blades alike.
Chain Saws are tools that need to be sharpened often to ensure a good cut, which in turn means better safety in cutting. An abrasive end to a long drill-bit type attachment is inserted in the drill and tightened down. The power drill quickly rotates the end as the Saw Blade is held against it. When choosing a chain saw sharpener, look for one that comes with multiple tips, since they will wear quickly.
Tormek makes a knife and scissor sharpener that is a bench top grinder with water to reduce friction. The grinder also comes as a complete package with a leather strop, although some users recommend using a paper wheel to hone and strop the edges of the knife.
The most important item to look for in a knife sharpener is versatility. Can it sharpen longer knife blades? Can it strop the edges adequately? Are the replacement parts easy to obtain? These are all considerations to make carefully especially in light of the fact that knife sharpeners suitable for Heavy Duty tool maintenance can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Knife Sharpeners for Everyday Uses
Of course the heavy duty grinding wheels and chain saw sharpeners are probably for the serious woodworkers and landscapers. For everyone else there is a wide array of options that are much less expensive and even more portable.
The handheld knife sharpener like that you would find in a butcher shop is a basic, non-electric tool. Other variations on this are the wheeled knife sharpeners where the blade is drawn between two hard wheels. Abrasive materials against which a knife is drawn at about a 30 degree angle is how each works, whether electric or manual.
You can still get good quality sharpening by hand or through electronic means. The skill of the knife owner at angling and stopping the blade is still at the heart of how sharp you can get your tools. There are educational course offered on knife care and sharpening, that you may want to consider if being the sharpest tool in the shed is important to you.

I have one that is the same as dremel, I use dremel stones because all attachments are inter changeable.I have 12, 20" blades for my chain saw and at $7.00 bucks a whack to get them sharpened becomes hefty. I usually give the blade I am using a slight touch with a file until it throws out fine chips. At night I sit in the barn and sharpen the blades to almost new. I am getting the feel for the right angle and my sharpening skills are getting better. I haven't sent a blade out in over 4 months and would say that the $26.00 dollars I paid is well worth it. A new blade is about $20.00. I also use it to sharpen my other tools by switching stones. I first practiced on a real old blade that doesn't have too many sharpenings left. I still use it and it is sharp as hell. Just be careful as the high speed and stone will grind it down fast. I would say go ahead and buy it for your birthday
