How To Sharpen Your Chainsaw Chain
New chainsaws are designed to cut wood efficiently and effectively. The chain is designed to slice through, and actually pull the bar down into the wood, making the process relatively easy.
However, if the thin, but tough coat of chrome on the chain is damaged, it doesn't take long for the chain to become blunt and require maintenance. The main culprit that damages the chain on the chainsaw is dirty wood. If you cut wood near the ground, it is likely grit will be unavoidable, resulting in the chain becoming relatively blunt over time.
You will realise you need to sharpen you chain when you need to push the saw through the wood, rather than then Saw Bar being pulled down through the wood, known as self feeding, which should happen when the chain is sharp.
A second sign that your chainsaw is blunt is the type of discharge that is produced. If the chain is blunt it will produce messy dust rather than Wood Chips.
Finally, look at the chain. Is it shiny? If so, the chrome has probably worn away, leaving the steel underneath. It is time to sharpen the chain.
How To Sharpen A Chain on A Chainsaw.
If you are out cutting wood and the chain has become so blunt that you have to apply excessive force to cut, it is time to sharpen that chain. It is best to get back to a workshop or shed to do this properly. If you are in a hurry, try to have a spare chain ready to replace the blunt chain. This is the quickest and easiest way to carry on cutting wood.
When back at the workshop, make sure that you have a solid bench to work on, there is good lighting and you have a pair of safety gloves.
There are three angles to sharpen a chainsaw chain. A round file, held at the right angle will sharpen all three at the same time. However, it must be the right diameter. The only way to get the right diameter round file is to check your Owners Manual. If you don't have one, take the chainsaw to a repair shop and get advice.
For best results, remove the burs from the side and top plates and sharpen the top edge. To get a consistent angle get a File Guide. Place the file guide over the chain and set the file. File with complete stokes applying pressure only on the downward stoke. That is because the file only cuts in one direction. To make the process easier, file one side of the chain first, then complete the other side.
Don't use a file that is too big or angle the file too high as it puts a back cut on the chain, as it wont sharpen properly and you will still have to put pressure on the saw to cut. However the reverse is also true, if you use a file that is too small or you have the file too low. This tends to put a hook on the chain and when you use the chainsaw initially it will bite into the wood, which can lead to dangerous situations. You will find that the chain will also go blunt quickly.
The important thing is to make sure that the upper corner has been sharpened and the chrome surface has been restored.
If you have sharpened the chain before, check the depth using a depth gauge jointing tool.
Finally, remember to always follow the chainsaw's manufactures recommendations to ensure that you keep your chainsaw chain sharp and in peak working condition.

There is a tensioning screw on the side of the Chain Bar.Also a locking nut to hold the tension once you have tightened it. Be careful not to over tighten the chain. There should be a little slack in it.

These 5 Chainsaw Supplies Should Always Be Packed
When you head to the hills to cut wood for the weekend, you better make sure and pack the proper chainsaw supplies or your workday might end quickly. Learn from our many years of experience because it is awful to sit and wait for parts to arrive. It drives me nuts having to waste that precious time waiting or driving into town when you know you could cut another cord of wood during that time.
Chainsaw Supplies We Never Leave at Home
1. Gas/Oil/Mix

To be truthful, we always bring two chainsaws to any job. If one breaks down (and it happens) we have a back up. With both saws running, I always fill both of them up at the same time and when the first chainsaw is empty, I grab the other one and start cutting again.
I would have included that on the list above but not everyone has two chainsaws, right?
1. Gas/Oil/Mix
On your list you must have gas or your chainsaw will not run, bar oil for the chain or you'll burn your chain up in a hurry and mix which is used in 2-cycle engines and you usually mix with gas at a rate of 50-1 or 40-1. Forget to bring gas/oil mix and you'll burn your engine up and that is one costly repair.
2. Sparkplugs
|My father made me a chainsaw box that carries all our critical supplies. On the lid he included this list above. I always carry two extra plugs and whenever we burn em out, we replace them immediately. I've been up in the mountains many times in the early years, sitting around waiting for mom to return with new sparkplugs. It happened to us once and it will never happen again.
3. Gas Filter
It happened to me once and it will never happen again. My chainsaw died on the job because the gas filter was plugged up with Wood Chips. Didn't realize what it was until we took it to the shop and paid our money to get it fixed. We use a funnel with a special screen in it to help us get gas into the saw. The repairman recommended it and I am sure glad he told us about it. Can't tell you how many times wood chips have fallen off of me while I was pouring gas and the filter caught it.
4. Extra Chainsaw Chains
It doesn't matter how careful you are, your blades will wear out. Sometimes it's hitting the dirt, sometimes you cut through metal spreaders in apple/Cherry Wood and a lot of times hard wood takes it's toll on your chain. Cutting with a dull chain is a waste of time and it burns up a lot of gas and oil. Be ready to change your chain at a moments notice and don't be afraid to purchase a few extra chains before you head out.
5. Toolbox
When you purchased your chainsaw it came with a handy tool that you use to pull the sparkplug, tighten the chain on the bar and bar nut that will allow you to change the chains when you need to. If you lose that tool, it sucks. Although it's the most important tool in your box, you also need wrenches, screwdrivers, socket sets, etc. You never know when you'll need them but I guarantee the day you forget your toolbox, is the day you desperately need it.
This is the top 5 chainsaw supplies we always take with us. Because we cut wood as a family someone will always have something you forgot. However, when I am cutting orchard wood close to our home, it drives me crazy to stop cutting wood to run home and get my supplies. That is why I always take my chainsaw toolbox that my father made. It has everything in it that I will need to fix the chainsaw in the field.
One other chainsaw part we take with us is the bar. It's not that hard to bind your chainsaw on limbs or branches. When you try to free your bar there is a lot of bending, pushing and pulling that can occur. Sometimes you will end up bending your bar which results in poor ad slow cutting. You'll notice that when trying to cut straight down on a log only to find it curve to the left or right instead of a straight line.

Homelite Chainsaw leaks gas out of cap...?
i have a homelite chainsaw that will leak its gas/oil misture when you tilt the saw. i understand that there is an air vent in the cap, i just dont understand how you can prevent the air vent from leaking the gas! the metal plug seems to fit snugly in the side of the cap... Are you just not supposed to tilt the saw??

7 Tips To Buying Used Chainsaws
The question of whether it makes more sense to buy used chainsaws over new machines is often asked and to be honest, there are a number of scenarios which need to be considered.
Budget is one consideration. If you are working on a limited budget then looking for a used chainsaw may be a wise option. However, if you have the money to spend then buying new is probably a better option.
There is an old saying which goes something like this..."buy used and you inherit somebody else's problems." I guess that statement can be applied right across the shopping board including buying used chainsaws but if you follow some sensible shopping practices then you can avoid the pitfalls.
Let's take a look at how to approach shopping for a used chainsaw:
1. Look in your local newspaper classifieds. There are garage or yard sales happening most weekends and these can often unearth some real gems.
2. Be careful though, finding a chainsaw at these sales is one thing thing but you need to make sure the machine is in good working order. Always try before you buy so ask the owner to give you a quick demo. You at least want to know the thing will start.
3. Farm sales and auctions are another avenue worth exploring. In fact, these can be a better option on most occasions than backyard garage sales.
4. Go to your local chainsaw or farm machinery outlet and let them know you are in the market for a chainsaw. Quite often, a client may be on the verge of trading in their chainsaw for an upgraded model and the service dealer can point you in the right direction.
5. Shopping for a used chainsaw online is as easy as typing in your request in your favorite search engine. Ideally, shopping online for a used chainsaw may not be as good as finding one locally but it's a good back-up if you run out of options. The downside is you will virtually be buying a machine sight unseen and will need to pay shipping charges.
6. Online auctions such as eBay are good alternatives.
7. Online forums can be a gold mine of information. Forums specific to chainsaw or machine tool members provide the opportunity to present your request and if you don't find a used chainsaw for sale among the members, it's more than likely you'll get plenty of referrals and great suggestions of where to look.

Can you run a chainsaw without the chain for the haunted house?
I'm doing a haunted house this year for Halloween once again and I need to know if I can take the blade off the chainsaw and it will still run.
The chain isn't what makes the chainsaw run, it's just needed to cut. You'll still be able to run the chainsaw and get it's noise if you remove the chain from the blade.
Actually, I do have a how to DVD, "How To... Haunt Your House!!", which talks about using a chainsaw for haunted houses. The guys do stress you remove the chain, but they also offer an interesting option. Hook up a car battery to both the blade and a Wrought Iron fence. You'll have to keep people away from the fence, but when the blade touches the fence it sparks like the chain is in place. The DVD is produced by Fun World so you may be able to get it and learn how to do this for yourself (and other Halloween decorations like making a bleeding skull).

Chainsaw Technology - Evolving At A Rapid Pace
I remarked the other day to a buddy of mine that if chainsaws get any lighter, we'll have to attach specially made weights to them to prevent them from floating away.
There's no doubt that chainsaws are becoming lighter today and chainsaw users are reaping the benefits with better and easier to handle machines.
Technology has encroached significantly in all areas of industry and one has to marvel at the evolvement of chainsaws during the last decade.
The latest batch of lightweight models haven't compromised on power and the emphasis on safety is extremely important. Manufacturers seem to be in some sort of technology race to see who can produce the most nimble chainsaw on the market. I looked at some of the models released during the past few months at a local trade show and I must say, woodcutters have some difficult choices to make. If you have been a brand loyalist in recent years you may have to start "thinking outside the box."
I posed the question to several chainsaw dealers that if I was in the market with a mid sized budget, what could I expect for my investment. Of the number of impressive models available. Stihl's MS230 and MS 230 C-BE models seemed to gain a strong nod of approval from the group.
It seems woodcutters have a lot of say in proceedings and manufacturers are sitting up and taking notice. One of the "bug bears" for chainsaw users over the years has been the starting functionality. Easy to start chainsaws are now here to stay and the tip is it is only going to get better. The addition of a quick Chain Adjuster to the above mentioned models means that adusting chain tension via tools is a thing of the past.
One complaint I hear continually amongst chainsaw users is that the weight of chainsaws can sometimes cut productive cutting time down to a minimum. Tiredness is something that can creep into the scenario and is one of the safety aspects a chainsaw user should take particular note of. I'm amazed at the technology that chainsaw manufacturers are able to include today as machines become less and less cumbersome. To give you an example of how much lighter chainsaws are becoming and how rapidly it's happening I randomly looked at Stihl's lightest chainsaw, the MS 192T. Would you you believe it is a whopping 26% lighter than it's predecessor.
The introduction of lightweight chainsaws across the board means that operators now have more flexibility when it comes to the tougher pruning jobs. Again, the lightweight design of today's chainsaws are playing a major part in cutting down the danger aspect to users. The fact they can be controlled more effectively means there is less chance of any sudden vibration causing the user to lose control.
Don't get too complacent though; chainsaws are still a dangerous piece of equipment however, any refinements from a woodcutter's perspective are a bonus.

have a stihl 025 chain oilier won't work any ideas before i take it into repair shop?
Here is how we test it in the shop. First you remove the bar and chain, and run the saw without them. If you have oil coming out just above the studs, then the oilier is OK and your ports on the bar are plugged. If that does not work, then you need to take it to a shop unless you are comfortable in taking the clutch off. The Oil Pump is under the clutch, and to get to the hose from the Oil Tank, you need to remove the wrap around handle. My suggestion is to take it to a shop if the first step does not work.
