How to Winterize your Lawn Mower in 4 Steps

First, before you begin any of the steps in this guide, make sure you have on a nice sturdy pair of work gloves. Lawn Mowers often have very small and sharp parts that can easily cause cuts on the hands and wrists. Safety is always the number one priority, so protect your hands from your mower before you begin protecting your mower from winter.

Step 1) Remove the gas from the mower – This can be done in a few different ways and largely depends on the type of mower you have. Some mowers have removable gas tanks that can be unfastened to easily remove the gasoline inside. Other mowers may have built-in valves or tubes for the purposes of removing fuel. Many times, however, you will have to remove the gasoline manually. The easiest way to do this would be to simply use the mower until it is out of gas. Sometimes this will not be an option, so you may have to use a siphon to remove the contents of the tank. Once the gas has been removed, try to transfer it to another machine rather than store it all winter. If the fuel is compatible with your vehicle, snow-blower or other gas operated device, it is advised to use it in this equipment rather than keep it stored for months on end. Removing the gas from your mower will prevent the gasoline from thickening, freezing/unfreezing and separating. One of the main causes of mowers not starting in summer is having been stored with full tanks of gasoline.

Step 2) Drain all oil from the mower – This should involve the gearbox AND Crank Case oil. Many people run their mower for years and never consider changing the oil, or even adding to the oil supply. Draining the oil from your mower before winter guarantees you will be replacing it with fresh oil every year and prolongs the lifespan of the mower. This is a good habit to get into with any vehicle that will be sitting for an extended period of time.

Step 3) Remove or disconnect the battery – Even when a mower is off, tiny amounts of power continue to be consumed by the battery. Rather than leave your battery connected all winter, disconnect it or remove it from the mower entirely. Batteries drain much faster in extreme weather, so try to store yours indoors if possible. A winter spent properly stored n the basement is much easier on a battery than a winter spent outside or in a barn.

Step 4) Clean it – Take this time to give your mower a good head to toe cleaning. Take special care to clean the blade and ejection areas. Cleaning helps prevent premature wear which can lead to cracking and product failure. Cleaning the blades will help keep rust away and keep the blades sharp for next mowing season. All exposed metal surfaces should be treated with a light grease to keep rust away in the cold winter months.

If it is not possible for you to follow all of these steps, make an effort to complete as many as possible. While the completion of all 4 of these steps should take you less than an hour and will likely add several years to the longevity of your mower, the completion of even a single step is better than nothing and will still pay dividends in extending the life of your equipment.

My new riding Mower Front tires appear to me to be "pigeon toed". Is this normal?

I just got this Troy-Bilt 23-HP V-Twin 50" Automatic Garden Tractor. I was test driving it around the yard and noticed the Front Tires point in. Being I have never had or ridden a ride mower before I don't know if this in normal. I tried to look it up in the book it came with and it did not show anything.

If the front tires on a Riding Mower are toed in enough to be readily visible that is to much and is not normal. It needs to be adjusted.

How do I power 5 sets of Led Lights?

I have a garden parasol that didnt come with a power connector. I bought an LED controller from screwfix. This driver has a 16w output. The 5xsets of 18 LEDS (tube type) are very dim. Is there anyway to uprate the Power Supply to create brighter lights?

try taking one of the led sets off leaving 4 and so on until they are bright enough you should find that less is more with led's these days

How to Choose the Right Shed, Step by Step

Ok, so you’re thinking about building a new shed but you’re unsure which shed is the right one for you. Lets go through it by the numbers and determine what your needs are, what options are available and the type of structure that will best service your needs now and into the future.

In this article we will step through all the determining factors to help you make the right choice the first time and save you both time and money.

You will be able to use this article as a formula to analyse your requirements and based on a number of factors including what you want to use the shed for, how much room you have and how much want to spend, you should be able to determine what shed is the right one for you.

1) The first thing you need to decide is why you need a shed, or if in fact you need a shed at all.

A shed is going to use some of the space in your yard and it’s also going to cost you money to build, so if you are only after short term storage and you have a lot of thing to store, a storage facility may be the answer.

However the greater your time-frame and the lesser your total storage area required or if you needs are not simply storage, the better chance that building a shed will be the most cost-effective solution.

Here is a list of some of the reasons why you may want to build a new shed:

 

• Additional storage
• Park the cars, boats, etc
• Workshop
• Gardening
• Bikes
• Mowers & garden tools
• Pets
• A place to hide from the wife/husband

 

2) Now that you have determined why you need a new shed or shelter and what you’re going to put in it, you can work out what type and size structure you require. When it comes to size there are a number of factors to consider including:

Required floor area – A quality shed will last you well over 10 years, so don’t just look at your immediate needs but look to the future. Is your family growing or might you take on a hobby that requires shed space, etc? I realise none of us has a crystal ball to look into the future, however if you believe you may need more floor area down the track, plan for it now. One shed in your back yard usually looks better than two or more small sheds scattered around the yard and it is almost always a cheaper option to build one larger shed too.

Available yard space & position – Where possible your new shed should fit in with you existing garden and add to the aesthetic quality of the yard. Here is a simple formula to use as a general rule: small yard – smaller shed, large yard – larger shed. Garden sheds can be nestled into a garden, positioned up the side of your house or in a position not visible, however if you need vehicle access to your shed it will probably need to be built in a position that has access to your driveway.

How big is your budget – When it comes right down to it, the shed you build can be determined greatly by what you can afford or how much you want to spend. Depending on the size, type, etc; the cost of your new shed could range between a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand.

3) Type of structure – Finally you need to decide what type of shed or shelter will best suit you needs. If you’ve gone through the previous steps you should have a pretty good idea, but we’ll have a look at a few different options anyway.

 

• Storage units – often less than a metre deep, these small sheds are ideal for those areas where space is limited, suitable for fitting under eaves, in car parks or high rise unit complexes without taking up too much space yet are large enough to store tools and sporting equipment etc.
• Garden Sheds – a multipurpose backyard shed. Garden sheds are probably the most popular garden building and they aren't just a place to store the lawnmower and tools. These days there is a growing trend in alternative uses for the garden shed, such as: playhouses, home offices and workshops and they come in a variety of sizes and configurations.
• Carports – if you want to keep your trailer, boat or car out of the weather an inexpensive alternative to a garage is a carport. They come in various sizes and with a gable or skillion roof.

"This old house" has no garage/tool shed -- if I add one, will I recoup the expense later on when I sell?

I have a 1924 bungalow in a downtown area. Over the years I have been slowly adding upgrades, making repairs and improvements. I always try to spend my money carefully on things that I know will add to the resale value -- tile floors, a new tin roof, etc.

It's a great little place but it has no garage or tool shed and this is really becoming a problem because I have no safe place to store my tools.

I would like to invest in a really nice tool shed, a wooden one with a concrete foundation and a tin roof. My handyman quoted me about $2,500 for the whole deal, including labor and materials.

I want to do it, but there's a chance I might be selling the home in about five years.

Should I spend the money and get a nice shed? Or should I get one of those cheap tin sheds at Home Depot and skip the concrete foundation?
Trust me, if I could get a garage for $2,500, I'd take it in a heartbeat, but I don't think my handyman would do it that cheaply! LOL

That kind of detail might just be the thing that tips the balance in your favor when a potential buyer looks at the property. We bought a home last year, and a nice shed for my husband's foundry equipment was one of the extras that attracted us to this particular property. The housing market is wide-open for the buyer, as I'm sure you know, and every little extra or feature is a plus.

And even if you don't fully recoup the $2,500 when you sell the home, you will have had five years of peace of mind, knowing that your tools were in a secured area. Those cheapie storage sheds are worth just about a pound of spit when it comes to resale value and security for your valuables.

3 Reasons Why Lying About your Lawn Mowing Business Isn't Worth it

There is a whole lot of advertising noise and commotion buzzing around and lawn mowing businesses have a tough time getting attention.

Think about it. With tons of advertising messages shooting across the path of your potential customers, how can they distinguish your marketing message from others? Can you really compete against the big dogs in your area with vaults of marketing money at their disposal?

The answer: Yes but it's not going to be easy.

The fact is advertising is harder than ever to compete in. Smaller lawn businesses have less to lose than some of the bigger lawn companies out there so to get attention, some owners exaggerate their claims, making promises they can't deliver on.

Since hype seems to be the only way to get your prospects looking at your lawn mowing business, you probably figure you need to follow in the footsteps of those who have walked outside the lines of truth.

Is this the right thing to do?

As I have talked about before, it bears repeating here again...you'll probably get away with it in the short term but not in the long term.

Let me explain...

Here are 3 reasons why avoiding false promises and staying truthful is the way to go.

1. You Have To Be Able To Prove It

The first reason is obvious. You must be able to back up any lawn mowing business advertising claims you make with actual and factual proof. It's legally termed making a "substantiated" claim, and the FTC gets particularly picky when it comes to claims that come close to challenging this rule.

Let's say you run an ad saying, "One out of 10 people in Anywhere County, USA use No Name Mowing." You'd better be able to show a reputable survey that clearly reveals those results. If you carried out the survey yourself, you have to prove it was organized and executed in good faith, conducted by an impartial third party, and that it genuinely represents the views and opinions of the group of people you are talking about.

But following this rule doesn't start and stop with just you. All claims also apply to anyone who works for you - employees, Web designers, subcontractors, etc. If your representatives inaccurately describe your lawn mowing business, you're in trouble.

Don't worry there is a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card. It's called "puffery" and you may want to do some due diligence about it and how you can use it in your lawn mowing business marketing.

For example, No Name Mowing claims its home-made organic lawn care fertilizer is "made from the best stuff on earth." Nobody will actually believe that claim because it's "puffery".

However, if No Name Mowing said its fertilizers were "made with fresh organic ingredients" that becomes a claim that must be proven. No Name Mowing would need to substantiate it. When any "reasonable" person would assume that your lawn mowing business ad's promise is so over the top that it is mere "puffery," you're no longer required to have to prove it.

2. It's Against The Law To Lie

As I eluded to in the first reason above, federal law blatantly states that you must tell the truth in ads you create for your lawn mowing business services. Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act (passed in 1914 and amended in 1996) says it's illegal to deceive or mislead your customers and prospects. You cannot make fraudulent claims or insincere offers about your lawn care services. The FTC also

specifically highlights claims that mislead by omission so you're not out of the woods yet. If you leave out relevant lawn care information or facts, or if your marketing claim hints at results that you can not deliver, you'll be on the hook.

Perhaps you're wondering...what happens if the law comes down on your lawn mowing business?

Well, if your inaccurate claims influence a customer's decisions, behavior, or compel them to buy, you could be in violation of FTC guidelines. The range of penalties go from massive fines to "cease and desist" orders to corrective advertising to even some jail time.

Of course, like most legal matters, what is constituted as "false" and/or "misleading" is always open to interpretation. A lawn mowing business advertising a claim that walks the fine line is a risk you may decide to take. Legally, that risk rides on who defines "misleading." Do your due diligence and get advice from a lawyer to help you make the right decision.

Remember that customers are not dummies. Most people can quickly pick up when a lawn mowing business is advertising a false claim.

3. Your Competitors Can Bite Back

The battle for market share is fierce so many lawn mowing businesses have turned to comparing competitors in their marketing. Lawn care services are launched with little preparation and training and don't necessarily meet meaningful customer needs just so company B can compete with company A. As a result, lawn care ads often dwell on some minutely different edge that offers a little bit better advantage than the competition but doing so creates the opportunity for your competition to bite back. Your competitors may decide your lawn care claim is untrue or inaccurate and force you to prove it. Let's face it, having a lawn care competitor register a complaint with the FTC and possibly take you to court doesn't exactly help your bank account.

Remember, if you claim your lawn mowing business is better than another, you must be prepared to support that with undeniable proof.

Today, customers have little tolerance for lawn mowing business marketers that promise and do not deliver. To develop advertising that attracts customers, use these 4 ingredients to stay on the side of marketing legally:

1. Don't Talk About Yourself

Turn to legitimate descriptive testimonials from current customers to talk about why you're the lawn mowing business of choice.

2. Be Real

Most people are down-to-earth and don't expect incredible results that lawn care services can't deliver. Promise what you can deliver.

3. Stick With The Benefits

Market how customers benefit if they go with your lawn care services. Always answer the question, "What's in it for them?".

4. Lower Risk

Offer money back guarantees if a customer is not satisfied. When you lower the risk, your prospect is more receptive to your marketing.
