How to Winterize your Lawn Mower in 4 Steps

First, before you begin any of the steps in this guide, make sure you have on a nice sturdy pair of work gloves. Lawn Mowers often have very small and sharp parts that can easily cause cuts on the hands and wrists. Safety is always the number one priority, so protect your hands from your mower before you begin protecting your mower from winter.

Step 1) Remove the gas from the mower – This can be done in a few different ways and largely depends on the type of mower you have. Some mowers have removable gas tanks that can be unfastened to easily remove the gasoline inside. Other mowers may have built-in valves or tubes for the purposes of removing fuel. Many times, however, you will have to remove the gasoline manually. The easiest way to do this would be to simply use the mower until it is out of gas. Sometimes this will not be an option, so you may have to use a siphon to remove the contents of the tank. Once the gas has been removed, try to transfer it to another machine rather than store it all winter. If the fuel is compatible with your vehicle, snow-blower or other gas operated device, it is advised to use it in this equipment rather than keep it stored for months on end. Removing the gas from your mower will prevent the gasoline from thickening, freezing/unfreezing and separating. One of the main causes of mowers not starting in summer is having been stored with full tanks of gasoline.

Step 2) Drain all oil from the mower – This should involve the gearbox AND Crank Case oil. Many people run their mower for years and never consider changing the oil, or even adding to the oil supply. Draining the oil from your mower before winter guarantees you will be replacing it with fresh oil every year and prolongs the lifespan of the mower. This is a good habit to get into with any vehicle that will be sitting for an extended period of time.

Step 3) Remove or disconnect the battery – Even when a mower is off, tiny amounts of power continue to be consumed by the battery. Rather than leave your battery connected all winter, disconnect it or remove it from the mower entirely. Batteries drain much faster in extreme weather, so try to store yours indoors if possible. A winter spent properly stored n the basement is much easier on a battery than a winter spent outside or in a barn.

Step 4) Clean it – Take this time to give your mower a good head to toe cleaning. Take special care to clean the blade and ejection areas. Cleaning helps prevent premature wear which can lead to cracking and product failure. Cleaning the blades will help keep rust away and keep the blades sharp for next mowing season. All exposed metal surfaces should be treated with a light grease to keep rust away in the cold winter months.

If it is not possible for you to follow all of these steps, make an effort to complete as many as possible. While the completion of all 4 of these steps should take you less than an hour and will likely add several years to the longevity of your mower, the completion of even a single step is better than nothing and will still pay dividends in extending the life of your equipment.

My new riding Mower Front tires appear to me to be "pigeon toed". Is this normal?

I just got this Troy-Bilt 23-HP V-Twin 50" Automatic Garden Tractor. I was test driving it around the yard and noticed the Front Tires point in. Being I have never had or ridden a ride mower before I don't know if this in normal. I tried to look it up in the book it came with and it did not show anything.

If the front tires on a Riding Mower are toed in enough to be readily visible that is to much and is not normal. It needs to be adjusted.

what is the best pull behind ATV mower- rough Cut Mower.?

I am looking for a good tough pull behind ATV mower. I need something that will stand up to saplings, rocks and tall grass. It can be a rough cut mower. Do I use a DR or a bushhog or does anyone have any other suggestions.

Best is a matter of opinion and you know what they say about opinions, everybody has got one. The bush hog is a very old and trusted brand. You cannot go wrong with that. But that is not bad mouthing the DR brand. I think you would get many more informative answers if you asked this at the gardenweb and other forums.

I like this product. I ended up tying the "key" to a Handle Bar cross bar w/ a piece of acc. cord (easier to keep track of). It seems to use more power (battery charge) when mulching. I use the bag frame and take the Mulch Plug out allowing the grass to blow out of the back and, as long as the discharge shoot doesn't get clogged, the mower seems to use less charge. I have found that when I unplug the battery for a short time, when it is fully charged, and plug it back in, the charger shows a red light for a short time then a green light which goes out after a second or 2 then the red light green light process starts over and over.... If I leave it unplugged for a bit longer then plug it back in it works fine, no red light green light process, just a short term red light then back to a solid green light. 
I have owned a plug in (corded) mower in the past that when it was "bogged down" in the least the motor would fry and then was useless. I have bogged this mower to the point of almost stopping it and there were no adverse effects. I hope this has helped you lead a more fruitful and productive life? "thank you, come again"

"clean & quiet alternative lawn mower"

Initial observation after 1st use: 
1. Not an effective bagger but impressive mulcher. 
2. Cutting is alright. 
3. I have .25 acre lawn and the 36-V battery is sufficient to do the job. 
4. Overall initial impression is that this is fun to use, clean and quiet and it is one way of reducng our dependency to oil. 
5. Hopefully, B&D would come out soon with a more powerful Lithium-Ion batteries on their outdoor tools.

I used the original B&D CMM1000 for 12 years without any problems. It needed no maintenance, and even the blade rarely needed sharpening. After all this time, the battery finally wouldn't take a full charge this year, so I decided to put the cost of a new battery ($125, it's actually two 12 volts in series) towards a new mower. There weren't many cordless mowers 12 years ago, now there seem to be a bunch, but based on my good experience with the older model I decided go with the CM1936. The CM1936 is a dandy mower, alot like the CMM1000 but with a 36 volt removable battery. 

My lot is around 1/3 acre, less the footprint of my house and shed. Alot of starting and stopping and picky mowing around my wife's vegetable beds, flower gardens, etc. The CM1936 mows it all without losing power, which it has plenty of. Starts right up, runs quiet, especially when mulching. A single height adjuster takes care of all the wheels. (Hard to believe there are still mowers that make you adjust each wheel separately.) It's really handy to be able to charge the battery somewhere other than where the mower is stored. This looks to be another no-maintenance mower. Unplug it, mow, plug it back in. What more could you ask for. The only con I can think of is the blade seemed a bit dull out of the box. 

Give up that stinky gas mower. Go cordless.

Just What I Wanted.

The CM1936 is proving to be perfect for my yard. I was concerned because we kept getting rain after the mower arrived, but the grass was getting so long that I felt I had to mow it before the neighborhood attacked, so I had at it. The long, damp grass was no challenge for the mower, and it has continued to do an excellent job with great convenience. I have only used it to mulch, and will probably only use it in that mode, so can not speak to the grass gathering capability. Excellent product!

Is the Tea bagger movement an empty trojan horse created by the GOP?

Is it a real grass roots movement or is it Astroturf.
Was it artificially created by the GOP to use as smoke and mirrors at rallies in order to cover up the truth of what is really happening in America, that we and the world really do support what Obama is trying to do?

Complicated answer. The Tea Bagger Movement was created by Rupert Murdock through his pundits Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh in February 2009, Not the Republican Party. The Republicans believed that because Murdock appeared to be supporting them that the Tea Party he created would as well, but the Tea Party Movement quickly fragmented. You have over 50 different Tea Parties now as well as the fringes who are trying to make the movements support them like the American Nazi Party.
I will focus on the two main parts of the Tea Party Movement as represented by the Tea Party Express and the Tea Party Patriots.

The Tea Party Express is a wholly owned creation of Rupert Murdock and has the purpose of helping the Murdock Empire take control of the Republican Party using Corporate Style "Hostile Takeover" methods, an example of which is the Murdock newspaper the Wall Street Journal which this week has turned their attack against the Republican Senators and Representatives who put down the "Stimulus Package" and voted against it then turned around and took credit for the money in their home states.

The Tea Party Patriots on the other hand have broken from the Murdock Empire and are true Conservatives who are attacking every one and everything that they disagree with including(but not limited to) Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Moderates, and Banks. While I disagree with much of the rhetoric coming out of the Tea Party Patriots, I can support them because they are standing up for what they believe in and are no longer puppets of the Murdock Empire.
