pc Power Supply to power 12 volt Outdoor Led lights?
I have a parts pc that I'm not using. I recently was given some low Voltage Outdoor l.e.d. lights. From what i've read the lights need a transformer to power them. With these lights being l.e.d.s, the wattage of the bulbs is only 0.375 each x 8 lights for a total wattage requirement of 3 watts. They are also 12 volt. The power supply in the old pc says 12 volt @13 amps. Will this work? or will the amperage be too much? The wiring will be roughly 50 feet long and 14-16 gauge strand copper.
First, PC are not 12v power supplies. Second, your power supply should have the capability to produce your required current power at no more than 80% of total supply capacity. A circuit will not draw more current then what it needs. LEDs are simply Light Emitting Diodes. Diodes forward bias is .6v generally. The wattage is the amount of heat dissipated (or light in this case) the diodes will generate. You want to know what the power requirements are for a 12vdc power supply to produce 4W. Remember, we are using 4W so that we do not approach the power supply's max output by more than 80%.
I = P/E Ohm's law ( I = current, P = watts, E = voltage )
I = 4w/12v
I = .33 amps
Now we solved for current requirements, you know that a 12 volt power supply that will supply a sufficient current of .5amps will be adequate and you meet the max capacity by 66%
Wire lenght should not be included in this calculation. Wire resistance is pratically nill.
Transformers are AC (alternating current) which uses volt-amperes (VA) as a power rating. These are step down transformers (usually from 120vac to 12 - 24vac with no bridge rectifier). This is not the currect application. If you use a plug in power supply that has a 12v output @ 1A, this will surfice. These are plentiful and can be obtain anywere.

Kitchen Cabinet Lighting With Custom Linear Strips
Kitchen cabinets lights were once considered purely functional fixtures whose only purpose was to illuminate shelves and work areas beneath cabinets. This is beginning to change, however, as day's larger homes and custom floor plans transform the traditional purpose and nature of the kitchen itself.
Today's kitchen has become more than a food storage and preparation area. It has now evolved into a central gathering place for any variety of home entertainment events. Kitchen cabinet lighting in this setting must meet more than base-level requirements to produce optimal visibility and comfort. It must address certain aesthetic concerns as well such as lighting color and brightness, color rendering of illuminated surface and interior design, and glare free light that will not hurt the eyes of homeowners and guests.
Safety, energy efficiency, and ease of operability are also top concerns when choosing fixtures, as some under cabinet lighting fixtures should be left on throughout the night, and almost all cabinet shelves will have to be adjusted or removed for periodic cleaning.
Kitchen cabinet lights fall into two primary categories: in cabinet lights and under cabinet lights. In cabinet strip lights provide interior lighting for cubic space and shelving. Under cabinet lights provide task lighting for activities done underneath a cabinet, such as food preparation and after-dinner cleanup.
Up until a few years ago, very specific types of kitchen cabinet lights were used for either in cabinet or under cabinet lighting needs. For most under the cabinet or task lighting applications, the puck light was a favorite fixture because it cast a bright circle of light onto the countertop that made it easy to see and work. When electric bills ran too high, fluorescent lamps were often substituted for pucks because of their lower heat output and power saving advantages. It was not uncommon in the 60's, 70's to see at least one fluorescent light over the stove.
However, due to more elaborate and ornate kitchen build outs, the dominance of puck and fluorescent under cabinet lights is no longer as absolute as it once was. This is because larger numbers of people are replacing generic counter top materials with custom, more ornate granite and marble. This presents a new dynamic for cabinet lighting manufacturers because these surfaces are highly reflective. Kitchen cabinet lights must now shield the eyes from reflective glare in addition to providing the same levels of light as they did before.
While it is true that most fluorescents are housed in frosted fixtures that minimize glare, they do not render color with enough detail to do justice to the subtle shades and variations that custom counter tops feature. Puck lights, with halogen lamps, render color better, but they are simply too intense and will almost always throw reflected light back into the eyes.
In this type of setting, it is almost always better to go with custom cabinet lights in the form of linear strips. These fixtures add value through both their low profile design and the unique qualities of glare free light they produce as an Accent Lighting source.
Each custom lighting strip is custom fabricated to exact kitchen cabinet or shelf dimensions. It is virtually invisible to the casual eye and features special shielding that reduces reflective glare to near-undetectable levels.
Linear strips, such as the ones manufactured by Phantom, accommodate a wide variety of festoon bulb options. A very popular bulb type for under cabinet kitchen lighting is xenon. Xenon low voltage lamps render colors at a level almost equivalent to that of sunlight. As a low voltage, dimmable lighting strip, it will bring out the subtlest red of granite and the multi-dimensional hues of marble like no other form of light-at a fraction of the cost of competing linear strip lights.
Linear strips fitted with incandescent festoons are ideally suited for interior kitchen cabinet shelf lighting. Incandescents produce the "whitest" form of light and make everything within the cubic interior of the cabinet clearly visible. Unlike puck lights, they consume virtually no cubic space within cabinets, leaving more room for storage and a more balanced presentation when the cabinet is opened in front of guests.
Restaurants should consider retrofitting any existing kitchen cabinet lights strips with LED replacement festoon lamps. These lamps produce a lumens output equivalent to that of incandescent and fluorescents, but they use 80% less electricity. Although a restaurant kitchen requires little, if any, aesthetic consideration, employee comfort and cost consciousness are of vital importance. Fluorescents emit UV radiation that is never good for anyone's eyes, and incandescent lights left on for long hours will result in expensive light bills. LED Energy Saving Light Bulbs are simply a good investment.
Replacing low voltage festoon lights with a one-time Led Light bulb upgrade will bring immediate, recurring, monthly return on investment, and it will create a more comfortable working environment for cooks.
It is also good for residential homeowners to consider installing at least one LED kitchen under cabinet light as a cost-conscious safety measure. This eliminates the need to stumble through a dark kitchen to rely upon the refrigerator light as one's sole source of illumination, and it adds a bit of comfort as well for the overnight guest who needs a midnight snack.

Light Up Your Life With Rope Lighting
Recent innovations in lighting fixtures have opened up all kinds of creativity in decorating ideas. Switch out some of your traditional Light Fixtures or just add new rope lighting to your projects.
Rope lighting is a string of Led Lights that are extremely flexible allowing you to use them in a straight line or they can be curved all the way into a U shape if desired. They are available in standard 120V as well as 12 V and 24 V, which do require a converter box attachment. Depending on the application you plan to use, it will be a good idea to get the advice of an electrical contractor, especially since the 120 V lights can be both used with a standard cord and plugged in or you can actually direct wire them to a Light Switch. The ones using a converter box are more do-it-yourself friendly.
There are several installation methods, from metal channels that the lights can fit into, to plastic clips that are attached, then snapping the light onto the groove in the hook. Then you would plug the cord into your light socket. These lights are available in clear, Warm White, various colors, as well as multi-color lights on one string.
Some of these light strings can actually be cut into specified marked lengths, which vary by manufacturer, and you can connect different lengths (but not voltages) together to make unusual configurations for your lighting. This is something that you can not do with traditional lighting. Talk about economical; they only uses 6 watts per foot of power, quite a savings over traditional lighting.
Kitchens often do not have enough lighting and these would be great to install on the underside of kitchen cabinets. They could be placed inside the metal channels or by using the plastic clips. By direct wiring to a wall switch with an appropriate dimmer switch, these little lights could function as nightlights also, so you wouldn't have to enter a dark kitchen.
Another great use for these lights would be on the underside of a handrail of a stairway on a two-story house. They would provide enough extra lighting in the evening without having to turn on the overhead light to see where you are going.
Think of all the ways you can use this type of lighting outside, either on a regular basis or especially during the Christmas holiday season. These lights can be used indoors as well as outdoors because of the waterproof plastic tubing the LED lights are inside of. Light a pathway; accent the edges of the driveway and flowerbeds. Create ambiance lighting for those outdoor parties in the summer by stringing some on the patio.
At Christmas, use colors of your choice and decorate around the roof line of the house, the edge of the porch roof, trees, and the bushes. Since accessories are available to create either flashing or chasing lights, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Here is a link with many types of plastic clips to hang Christmas Lights with...this prevents you from having to use any type of nails,drilling through any tiles etcetera...Even though this is a link to order from online these are quite common and can be found at just about any decent sized department store, thus preventing having to return clips that may not work properly..buy them locally for then if they by accident were not the proper type of clips, you can exhange them for the right ones without having to pay shipping and handling and any other fees that would not make them economical...but thislink is to show you that , yes, there are many types of clips that WILL work for what you need..

The Hidden Beauty of Solar Garden Lighting
Recently I was doing some research on solar landscaping lighting products to purchase for my yard. I found a whole new world of Solar Lighting products out there, and a great way to use Solar Power Yard Lights to decorate my yard and keep it safe at the same time.
I found that the more LED's (light emitting diode) that the solar Outdoor Garden lights came with, then the brighter they will be. I found Solar Garden lighting made for multiple applications, and made out of many different types of materials. I was amazed at just how far Solar Lights had actually come.
I found Plastic Solar lights, Stainless Steel solar lights, solar garden gnomes, solar fairies, Solar Lamp post lights, outdoor Water Pump, solar shed lights, solar lanterns, Path Solar lights. Suddenly I found myself engulfed in information overload!
Whoa! I had to step back, slow down, and let all this information get absorbed. Then I think I finally had it all figured out. All I needed to do is to purchase the Solar Landscape lights I wanted with the most LED's to be the brightest, and since they are going to be outside I would like to use stainless Steel Solar lights, or plastic solar lights as much as possible.
Well I made my purchase and I got my solar lights. I don't think I could be any happier with it either. Everything in the yard and garden is accented so nicely. All our friends and family say it's so beautiful, and how much did it cost me. They still haven't seen the real hidden beauty of solar garden lighting. I tell them the way that I see it. Since I am not paying anything to the electric company to light my solar lights and keep my place safe and beautiful each night. Then the real hidden beauty of solar garden lighting is that in the long run it pays for itself and is free!

Introducing a New Flavor of Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs
The pros and cons of energy-efficient light bulbs have been much debated over the last decade. The main focus of the discussion has been CFL light bulbs. Introduced in the '80s, these electricity sippers have been greatly improved over the years. CFL light bulbs are enthusiastically endorsed by the Energy Star program and are the most popular green light bulbs among consumers, businesses and even public institutions looking to reduce lighting costs and shrink their carbon footprint.
Among the various energy-efficient light bulbs, CFL light bulbs have notable drawbacks when compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, their higher purchase price, slower start-up time and inferior dimmability among them. CFLs also contain a small amount of mercury and must be recycled at the end of their life. On the plus side, these energy-efficient light bulbs pay for themselves in energy savings quickly when used for three or more hours per day. The best CFL light bulbs also cast a flattering light, much better than when they were first offered. CFLs are a solid choice for consumers seeking more eco-friendly lighting, but there's a new option to consider.
A Legislative and Regulatory Foundation for Energy Efficiency: More than Just CFL Light Bulbs
Legislation passed by the U.S. government in 2007 mandates efficiency gains for commonly-used light bulbs by January 2014. Starting in 2012 with higher wattages, light bulbs must be about 30% more energy efficient than current standards require. While CFL light bulbs meet this challenge, the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) doesn't favor any specific technology. The broad standards have created opportunities for leading lighting manufacturers, such as Philips and General Electric, that are committed to developing innovative energy-efficient light bulbs which address a wider range of lighting applications than CFL light bulbs alone.
While the 2007 EISA covered general use bulbs, new rules for the improved energy efficiency of so-called PAR (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) lamps (commonly used in residential and commercial downlighting applications) were issued in June by the U.S. Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu. These regulations are expected to go into effect in the second half of 2012. Consumers will see some exciting changes as manufacturers strive to increase the efficiency of these green light bulbs to meet the new standards. For lower wattage lamps, i.e. those of less than 100 watts, the 2012 standards will drive efficiency up by 24% to 87% depending on bulb diameter, wattage and voltage. This mandate is also technologically neutral, leaving manufacturers free to unleash their ingenuity in designing the energy-efficient light bulbs they wish to produce and make available to the U.S. market.
High-Efficiency Halogen Lamps - A Clear Choice in Green Light Bulbs
Lamp manufacturers have been aware of consumer dissatisfaction with CFL light bulbs and have actively participated in recent legislative and regulatory processes aimed at arresting the pace of climate change due to lighting-related greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, proactive lighting companies have been investing resources in R&D to ensure compliance with forthcoming laws and regulations while giving individual and business consumers a wider choice of energy-efficient light bulbs.
As a result, right now, almost three years ahead of schedule, screw-in high efficiency halogen lamps are on the market. These energy-efficient light bulbs have several advantages over CFL light bulbs:
- Instant-on technology
- Sparkling white light: not blue, not butterscotch, just crisp and clear
- Superior dimmability (and because they're in the incandescent family, extended lifespan when dimmed)
- Compatible with motion control sensors
- Stable light output: will fire regardless of ambient temperature
- Suitable for use in fully-enclosed fixtures
- 100% Mercury-free
What makes these energy-efficient light bulbs greener than the traditional bulbs being phased out?
- High-efficiency halogens use less electricity to produce the same amount of light.
Example 1: Philips offers a 70 watt general-purpose bulb, which is equivalent to a 100 watt standard incandescent. That's 30% more energy efficient and nearly 10% more efficient than required by EISA by January 1, 2012.
- High efficiency halogens last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
Example 2: GE's 48 watt PAR30 bulb (itself 20% more energy efficient than the applicable DOE 2012 rules for incandescent reflectors) has a 4,200 hour average rated life, 40% longer than the 75 Watt Halogen lamp it is designed to replace.
Extra life translates into more time to realize financial and carbon emissions savings.

What causes a light bulb to explode in a thunderstorm?
"Short circuit of sorts. The light bulb must have over heated by a sudden rush of energy causing it to burst. Though the other lights just went out because the burst of energy only needed one main exit to exclude its energy. Thus the light bulb bursting. Well that's what I think". <--- that is my friends sight on why a light bulb explodes we just wanted to know if it was true or if you could give us knowledge on the subject.
You are mostly correct. If there is a surge in electricity then this will over heat the filament in the light bulb and causing it to fail. But causing it to shatter is very rare. It does happen though. As soon as the filament fails then the electricity is turned off because the circuit is broken.
The air pressure answer is incorrect. If that was the case then you could not purchase any light bulbs in the city and then take them up to your cabin at 6,000 feet in the mountains as all the bulbs would break. And your household light bulb is a vacuum, no air inside so the filament will last longer.
