Most people, myself included, thought all you need to power wash something was high Water Pressure and maybe a little heat (as in warm water). But there are several more elements that determine the effectiveness of your power washing jobs. The basic three ingredients to pressure washing is water (both in its presence and temperature), pressure, and detergent or chemicals. Combined, these three elements can create a pretty significant environment for optimal cleaning. However, remove or decrease one just enough and the entire environment changes.
Almost everyone is familiar with the relationship between oil and water right? Which is precisely why simply firing up your Pressure Washer and blasting the driveway with hot water isn't necessarily going to get it as clean as you'd think it would. You need to have a detergent that is going to break down the grease and oil, not just water.
The same applies for any surface you're trying to get clean with a Power Washer. Most commonly used on decks and fences, these washers are known for making wood look as good as new. However, what many don't realize is that even though it may look good immediately after spraying, the mildew and mold they think is gone is only going to come back a short time later. In order to really clean a fence and/or deck, you must use something that will effectively kill the mildew. The best thing for this is oxygen bleach.
Oxygen bleach comes in powdered form and should be mixed with water and possibly a powered all purpose home cleanser or soap as well. Generally 1/4 to 1/3 cup of oxygen bleach to gallon of water should be fine for killing mildew and mold on fencing. As with any pressure washing job, you'll want to start in an area not in plain view as to get a feeling for how the cleaning will affect the overall look of the wood. As with any wood also, you want to make sure you're using the right tip. To be safe, don't use anything less than a 30 degree tip when power washing wood surface. Something like a 15 degree tip used for concrete will be too direct and may splinter or ruin the wood.
Whether you're pressure washing your deck or vehicle, the same three elements come into play in helping you effectively clean with your power washer. Remember that using the correct pressure washer detergent is important to successfully killing such things as mildew or cutting through tough stains like grease and oil.

An Adrenaline Rush - Utilizing A Power Pressure Washer
An all-powerful pressure washer typically sprays water at high pressures to clean large surfaces such as buildings, patios, sidewalks, farm equipment and roadways. Nothing says fun more than shooting dirt and debris off something with a power pressure washer. Your standard Power Washer is equipped with a High Pressure pump and reservoir, spray hose and nozzle, and an electrical cord. You simply fill the reservoir and use a water hose to connect it to the water supply. Next plug in the power washer and you are totally ready to commence power cleaning.
The small electrical units has a nozzle pressure of over 1400 PSI, which is an astounding amount of pressure. A word of caution, please be careful as this much pressure can really hurt you so keep your spraying confined to inanimate surfaces only. Speaking of pressure, make sure you have the correct unit for the job. For instance, if too much pressure is used, you can take the paint off virtually any surface instead of just cleaning. However, if the intention is to clean and get rid of old paint off surfaces such as porches or decking, than a High Power washer is the way to go. However, the golden rule to adopt is to test a tiny unnoticeable area before going for it all.
Okay, now that the preventive subject matters are conveyed, what else can be cleansed with a power washer? Well, another application is cleaning the aluminum siding on your house, which is very convenient when no maintenance to the outside of your house has not been done for quite some time. Or how about cleaning the driveway, just start up that power pressure washer and away the dirt, stones, and anything else standing in the way of a clean drive.
In any case, power Pressure Washers can be simple and fun to clean many types of large surfaces, particularly when used in a safe manner. So if you have a a couple of overdue big cleanup projects waiting to be completed, look forward to a faster completion time with less effort by buying or renting a power washer.

power washer on low pressure taps?
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows if a pressure washer will work at all well running from a tap with low pressure? Using a hose on the taps to wash my car has driving my crazy! I can get a fine spray but thats about it!

A pressure washer has a built in pump to up the pressure. To do this, you have to have enough water volume to the pump for it to do it's job.
I have a cabin where there is low pressure/volume. I use a pressure washer there, and it seems ok. About all you can do is try it.

Leaking gas on Pressure Washer?
Filled Gas Tank on pressure washer and before I could even start it, all the gas ran out near the Air Filter. I checked for leaking Gas Line
You do not provide the make , model and or type of pressure washer so the answer will be very generic.
The most likely answer is a sticking float in the carburetor. This can sometimes be cured by GENTLY tapping the bowl that houses the float. If this does not stop the flow then you will probably have to do a thorough cleaning of the carburetor. When you have the carburetor clean it should be reassembled with new parts from a Carburetor Rebuild kit. I suggest that if you have a flexible Fuel Line that you use an inline filter to keep particulate out of the carburetor.

A pressure washer is a powerful cleaning machine available for industrial and commercial cleaning applications. There exists a wide variety of High Pressure washers suitable for a number of different cleaning tasks. Let's examine the different types and features to help you determine the right machine for your applications.
Types of Pressure Washers
Pressure cleaning machines are classified in many ways. Based on the temperature of their output, they can be either a cold Water Pressure washer, hot Water Pressure Washer, or steam pressure washer. Similarly, based on the nature of the cleaning job, they are classified into commercial pressure washing machines and industrial pressure cleaning machines. Industrial systems offer higher pressure levels and flow rates for more demanding applications. The power method is yet another dividing factor for pressure cleaners. Today's systems can be powered by gasoline, propane, diesel, or electricity.
It is not easy to select the best pressure washing machine. Each system is suitable for different applications. The following are a few tips about the specifications that could help select the best machines for various kinds of cleaning jobs.
There are three key specifications defining the power of a pressure cleaning machine: output pressure, output temperature, and flow rate.
Output Pressure
Output pressure level is the force at which water exits the machine. It is expressed in pounds per square inches (psi). Pressure level is perhaps the most important specification as it determines the overall power of the machine. The pressure level varies from model to model, normally between 500 psi and 8000 psi.
Higher pressure levels are suitable for demanding applications, like degreasing or cleaning of heavy machinery, while lighter commercial applications do not need such high levels. Pressure washing machines used for auto detailing also do not need very high pressure levels. The output pressure of such machines should be 1500 psi or less.
Output Temperature
One can classify pressure washing machines into three types based on the output temperature: cold water, hot water, and steam.
Cold water machines eject water at room temperature, that is, without heating the water. Cold water output is ideal for cleaning soft surfaces, namely surfaces that cannot withstand high temperatures, and lighter applications that do not require the additional power afforded by heat. Cold water is not effective for degreasing applications without the addition of a degreasing chemical or green degreaser.
Hot water machines can provide an output temperature of 210°F. Hot water output has improved cleaning efficiency for difficult cleaning tasks, due to the increase in temperature. However, steam output offers the greatest cleaning power. High steam temperatures up to 330°F enable the dissolving and rapid removal of the most stubborn residues and grease. Most industrial pressure washer machines utilize steam output.
The best systems on the market today provide all three types of outputs in a single machine. Pressure washing machines that provide all three outputs are called tri-mode machines.
Flow Rate
Flow rate indicates the amount of water that flows through the nozzle in a certain timeframe. It is expressed in gallons per minute (GPM). Flow rate varies from model to model. Flow rates as low as 0.5 GPM are ideal for auto detailing and applications where drainage is limited, while higher flow rate of 8 GPM are ideal for heavy industrial degreasing applications. Higher flow rates do increase cleaning power, since larger amounts of water are being exerted onto a surface.

i need to buy a pressure washer to start a small after-school business to earn some extra cash. i will need a Gas Pressure washer with enough power to clean driveways, walkways, fences, stone, brick, oil stains from garages, ext. what is the minimum PSI i need to be able to do these jobs effectively?
The more pressure you can get, the better. But also watch water volume too. The cleaning power of a pressure washer can be found by multiply pressure (psi) by water volume (GPM). Some manufacturers offer a lot of pressure with very little volume.
That said, 3000 psi is a good all around pressure. You can always lower the pressure by the type of nozzle that you use.

What is a pressure washer?
A pressure washer is used to generate High Pressure water that can remove mold, dust, mud, grime, and dirt from many different services. The mechanical device is usually Gas Powered, although there are the smaller electrical powered ones.
A pressure washer can be used on buildings, concrete, as well as vehicles to clean and restore the objects back to their original state. If you are not using the pressure washer for commercial purposes and will only need it for a small or one time project, you can rent the equipment for a small fee.
The pressure washer can produce pressure up to 5000 PSI and in some cases even more.
When you purchase or rent your pressure washer, it should come equipped with:
- A High Pressure Hose (lengths vary)
- A Trigger Gun
- A Motor to Drive the Water Pump
When you are ready to begin using your pressure washer, the first thing to consider is the water source. You have to ensure that the water source is adequate to feed the pressure washer a constant supply of water. The flow of water source must be equal or superior to the flow that the machine demands.
If water is not given in a constant flow to the device, the pressure washer will malfunction and the motor could burn up, causing irreversible damage.
There are several different nozzles available for attachment to the pressure washer. Each nozzle offers a use for a particular job and will allow a different stream of pressurized water to come through. The nozzles vary from a pencil thin line sized stream of water to a triangular sized larger stream. The majority of nozzles available will attach directly to the trigger gun.
Deep Cleaning with your Pressure Washer
If you are working on a project that requires a little more elbow grease, the use of a nozzle allowing detergent to be incorporated in to the water flow may be the best solution. You can choose from two different types of chemical injectors, a low-pressure and a high-pressure injector.
You should be aware that a pressure washer can be a very dangerous tool if not operated carefully. You should read the safety instructions that will be supplied with the machine before attempting to operate it. The powerful jet of pressurized water coming from the nozzle can rip the flesh right off of a bone.
You should also be aware that when using the pressure washer to clean surfaces such as concrete, the foundation can be broken up and small and even large objects be thrown in to the air with great speed. You should understand that using a pressure washer on asphalt can lead to breaks and crumbling if the water is being directly aimed at a crack or void in the surface.
When you are looking to purchase or rent a pressure washer be aware of the job at hand and determine which may be best for your project. You can find electrical and gas powered units and the pressure will vary. There are some gas Powered Pressure washers that will produce hot water, making them ideal for cleaning grease or oil stains. You should never use a gas Powered Pressure Washer indoors, due to the fumes from the exhaust.
