The Origin of Tractors - A Brief History
Tractors are used today commonly for agricultural purposes. Tractors are large powered vehicles that drive and slow speeds but produce a lot of power. There are various agricultural implements that can be towed behind the tractor to do various jobs on the farm.
The first tractors came about around 1850. The earliest tractors were made of steam engines that drove a mechanical belt. These steam-powered agricultural engines were used until the early 1900's when more reliable tractors were developed.
The first gasoline powered tractor was built in 1892. Only two were sold, and this did not occur until 1911. Henry Ford was the first to mass produce tractors when he introduced the Fordson in 1917. The Fordson was a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine tractor. Ford Tractors began the widespread popularity of tractors.
A conventional tractor consists of a driver's seat between two large wheels. The engine is located in front of the driver. There are two small steerable tires below the engine compartment. This design has remained the same for almost the whole existence of the tractor. The only exceptions are the modern tractors with an enclosed cab for driver comfort and safety. Most closed in cabs come with air conditioning and heating. This makes it easier to farm in comfort. Closed in cabs also brought the idea of computers in tractors, since they can be protected.
Farm Machinery has made many new advances over the past century. There are now many different brands of mass produced tractors, the most popular over the past century being John Deere, Massey-Ferguson, New Holland, and Case IH Tractors. Most people chose brand based on what their family has had in the past. These brands created competition, and therefore lowered the price of tractors.
Farm tractors are mostly used for plowing, tilling, disking, harrowing, planting, or other similar tasks. Different farm implements are attached to the rear of the tractor. With new technology, farming has become very precise. Most new tractors have the ability to come equipped with a GPS and on board computers that show the farmer exactly where he/she is. This also leads to auto steer options. These make sure the tractor does not overlap with the previous row and waste fuel. The tractor does have to be steered at the end of the row.
Within a modern tractor, there are 5 pedals. There is the clutch, to disengage the transmission. There is a left Rear Wheel brake and a right rear wheel brake. These help the driver control the tractor during turns. There is a differential lock pedal. This assures that the same amount of power is given to both back wheels, thus preventing slipping. But, the differential lock has to be taken off during turns so that the wheels can operate separately. The last pedal is the throttle. The throttle works much like that of a car throttle. In tractors, there is also a hand operated throttle that ensures that the tractor goes the same speed up and down the different rows.

Is it more difficult to shift a 13 or 18 speed transmission on a tractor trailer than on a standard 10 speed?
I am a CDL Class A truck driver but I have only operated 10 speed transmissions..I am wondering what the shift patterns are for 13 and 18 speed transmission trucks......
I am not real sure of the pattern of the 18's, but a 13 is simply a 9 speed that you can split the top 4 gears to overdrive. Instead of coming back to low for 6th gear like you do on your 10 speed when you go into high range, you actually go into 2nd. Once you are in 6th, there is an additional slide button by your thumb on shifter handle that you slide forward for 7th. That shift there is no need for clutch, simply slide forward and let off the throttle and it shifts. Then to go to 8th, you in one motion, slide splitter button back and shift to next gear (which would be 3rd gear position. Then just continue that splitting sequence through rest of gears. You do not need to split all the gears if you don't need the power. You can simply shift as a 9 speed and once you are in final gear slide splitter button forward for the overdrive.

The CARB law, which makes you have to retrofit your Diesel tractor is very expensive. Why so much money?
It's basically just a fancy muffler system and they are charging 20-30 thousand dollars.
Are you sure you are getting the right information? If I am not mistaken your tractor would be grandfathered in and not subjected to the current standards. It sounds like someone is trying to take you for a ride.

Once you begin your search you will see that the makes and models and options are infinite and that you will have no problems finding a machine to suit your needs and your budget. As with other collectable items, you should first understand your needs as this will drive what and how you start your search. Take some time to understand your needs then you will have to translate them into a list of requirements that will give you a clear picture of what you are looking for.
It goes without saying that what you want the tractor to do will determine what type of tractor you choose. If you want to use farm machinery with your antique tractor, you should look at the horsepower requirements of this implement and make sure the tractor you decide on has the weight and the correct horsepower to successfully complete the job. Try running a wire from battery to the starter it if turns over you have a bad Starter Solenoid. Sometimes you can jumper the solenoid to get it to start. But would try the wire from battery to starter first.

The time of year for you to start thinking about planting your food plot is now, and proper whitetail food plot preparation is a must. If you are serious and willing to put in the time and effort, then my 15 years of experience will be of help to you.
The first thing you must do is select your food plot site. Personally, I prefer my food plots not be smaller than 1/2 acre, nor larger than five acres. It is best to place your plot in or near woods or thick cover, and if possible away from property lines. A good whitetail food plot is generally rectangular and irregular in shape. Understand that what you plant will require as much as four hours of sunlight each day, so be aware of what trees may hinder this.
Whitetail food plot preparation begins with a soil test. Be sure and get one, as they are inexpensive and could very well mean your success or failure. It is absolutely imperative that you bring your soil as close to a pH of 7 as possible. If the test requires that you add lime to reduce the acidity of the soil, then attempt to buy it in bulk. It is much less expensive that way. Also, depending on your site location and accessibility, you might check with your local co-op as they may be able to transport and spread the lime for you, or know someone who will. This is a huge savings in both time and money.
Clearing the land of grass and weeds can present a problem. There are several ways this can be accomplished. I prefer not to use a herbicide to do this, but if your area has already greened up this may be necessary. If so, then spray and wait ten days to two weeks before proceeding. It is much better if you can bush hog as low as possible, then plow and disc, or just disc to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. This will mix your lime in thoroughly and get it working for you.
Now, using a harrow drag or a chain link fence with cement blocks for weight, go over your food plot until your clods are broken up and it has become reasonably level. Next, use a cultipacker or a roller to firm the soil, as a solid base is essential in proper food plot preparation.
Okay, let's go over what we have so far. You have selected your site, cleared the land, and added lime if necessary. Then you disc to a 4 to 6 inch depth, used a drag and then rolled. Looks like it's time to plant. right? Wrong! Big mistake if you do.
Remember, you cleared away grass and weeds to prepare your whitetail food plot. Well, for years and years those grasses and weeds have been depositing seeds into the soil you have just cultivated, and those seeds are now going to germinate. So if you plant your high quality seed at this time, you will lose. The grasses and weeds will choke the majority of it out before hunting season and you are not going to be happy.
If you want, you can wait two or three weeks to let some of the undesirable seeds germinate and hit it with a herbicide. Another waste of time, effort and money. Many of your weeds and grasses germinate at different times of the year. This is a problem that can be solved.
